Spelling Bee 19.4.16

Today 6 year six children participated in a spelling bee with our '4learning Partnership' (Glenfrome, St Werburghs and St Barnabas).  The event took place at Glenfrome Primary.  Although we didn't win, we still had a Cabot pupil in right up until the last round!  Well done to all who took part!

Planetarium visit 13.4.16

To "launch" our 'New Worlds, New Discoveries' topic, we were visited today by Mario and his inflatable planetarium.  Once inside, we found out lots of really interesting facts about our solar system and the future of space travel. At the end, we were able to touch a piece of the meteorite which landed in the Arazona desert about 50,000 years ago!

Engineering day 29.1.16

As part of maths week (next week) year 5 and 6 were very lucky to have a visit from an engineer, Mrs George, today.  Over the day, we learned a lot about the different types of engineering but focused particularly on civil engineering.  After discussing how to make structures strong and exploring some examples, pupils were set the challenge of building a bridge that could span at least 35cm.  Every group was given 50 lollipop sticks and glue with which they needed to plan, design and make a bridge which could withstand a load of 6 kg.  The bridges will not be ready for testing until next week (as the glue needs to dry) but we did test some of the bridges made by Mr Ross and Mrs George.  Amazingly, these bridges, made only using lollipop sticks, could with stand 6kg (one of Mr Ross's did break - but it was loaded from the top not the deck of the bridge so was not as strong).  We had a fantastic day and are very grateful to Mrs George, who gave up her time to share her expertise.  Next week, testing...

Zoo visit 8.1.16

Today year 6 visited Bristol Zoo.  The main focus of the visit was life cycles of animals.  The children took part in a workshop to explore this in more detail and where they were able to hold and touch live animals.  We were very lucky with the weather and had a fantastic day!
